CLEANING TIPS

Adhesive tape sponge with amyl acetate (banana oil) or dry-cleaning solvent. (Use amyl acetate away from heat or open flame and in well ventilated area).
Alcoholic beverages sponge immediately with cold water. Apply vinegar water (1 part water, 1 part vinegar) and rinse with clear water. Use diluted liquid bleach to remove last traces of stain. Launder in hot suds.Amethyst use 1 tablespoon of ammonia in ½ cup of water and soak stones, scrub with soft toothbrush and rinse in warm water and dry
Artificial flowers pour some salt into a paper bag and add the flowers. Shake vigorously as the salt will absorb all the dust and dirt and leave your artificial flowers looking like new!Bath tub mould - wash in bleach.
Blood - blot the spot with weak solution of ammonia - 3 tablespoons to a quart of cold water. If not completely removed, apply more solution directly on spot and then sponge off with cold, clear water (without saturating). Never use hot water or soap. After a brief interval, moisten stain with clear vinegar and then blot thoroughly .OR soak in lukewarm water in solution of Amaze using quarter cup of Amaze per gallon. For old stains, soak over night. Launder in hot water. OR put a few drops of ammonia on the stain and then wash with detergent and rinse.Blood
stains on clothes - pour a little peroxide
on a cloth and proceed to wipe off every drop of
blood.
Brick fireplace - rounded teaspoon of dishwasher powder in 1 litre of warm water. Cover hearth scrub with stiff brush. Stubborn stains remove with 1 part muriatic acid to 10 parts water.
Bubble gum - place article in freezer. Remove as much as possible, allow to warm and rub with peanut butter, wash with shampoo in very hot water
Slower burning candles - chill overnight or dip into soap suds being careful not to wet the wick.Candles to make drip proof - soak in strong salt water.
Candy, soft - (including chocolate) requires treatment with a solvent - lightly sponged on - to remove fatty stain. Blot with clean, absorbent cloth. Finally, use a cool detergent solution to remove sugar stain.
Candy, hard - (basically sugar and water) can usually be removed without a solvent. Scrape off excess with dull knife or rounded spoon and sponge lightly with cloth dampened in cool water. If not successful use a detergent solution.
Carpet grease newly spilt - On carpets or rugs quickly pour lots of salt over the grease spill. Work into soiled areas with a brush and allow to stand for half hour before vacuuming. Shaving cream may be used to clean carpet stains
Ink stains on carpet - remove with a paste of milk and cornmeal. Apply and allow to stand for a few hours. Brush or vacuum. For stubborn stains repeat several times.
Oil from indoor\outdoor carpet - apply the hand cleaner called Goop. Apply with clean cloth and rub briskly working from outside toward the centre. Reapply if necessary. Wipe residue away with clean cloth.
Carpets - rub soiled spots with baby wipes.
Carpet stains - try shaving cream on ketchup, blood, tea, coffee and many others
Cat urine - acetic Acid 15% solution (find 28% solution in photo Chemical stores by Kodak and dilute with little less than equal quantity of water. Apply generously and several treatments if necessary, odour of Acetic Acid will disappear when the solution evaporates.
Cat litter add a tablespoon of baking soda to cut down on odours.
Caulking - clean with 5 tablespoons (100ml) of trisoldium phosphate (TSP) to 4 litres of warm water. Rinse thoroughly after. Remove black discolouration (probably mildew) with 1 part chlorine bleach to 3 parts water.
Chewing gum - rub with ice and scrape with dull knife. If stain remains, sponge with dry-cleaning solvent. Launder in hot water. OR apply an ice cube first to harden the gum; then work it off with the dull side of a knife or rounded edge of a spoon. Use dry-cleaning fluid to remove residue. OR soften with baby oil and wipe away excess oil.
Chewing gum on washable fabrics - pick off as much as possible and then soften wit egg white before laundering.
Chewing gum from a child's hair - to remove soak with olive oil or egg white.
China cracks - make almost invisible by soaking in scalding hot milk for 30 to 40 minutes.
China cups to remove tea stains - rub with a little salt in a damp cloth. Rinse with clear water.
Chocolate - wash in hot water, If a brown stain remains, sponge with diluted solution of liquid chlorine bleach. RINSE WELL.
Chrome dampen a cloth with ammonia or vinegar and wipe
Closets - insert whole cloves over the surface of an orange. Let dry and hang in closet or drawers.
Cocoa - wash in hot water, If a brown stain remains, sponge with diluted solution of liquid chlorine bleach. RINSE WELL.
Coffee - soak in cool water, then launder in hot suds. If stain remains, use liquid chlorine bleach. Soak 15 minutes in solution of 1 tablespoon bleach to 1 quart of water. Re-wash.
Cola - sponge immediately with cool water. Apply equal parts vinegar and water. Launder in lukewarm water. Bleach remaining in diluted liquid chlorine bleach.
Concrete oil stain - use engine degreaser such as GUNK tm or DUNK tm.
Concrete stains from evergreen needles - use household bleach to five parts water. Use stiff bristle brush. If necessary increase the proportion of bleach to water. Bleach will act faster if first scrubbed with solution of one part glycerol to four parts water.
Concrete to remove rust from concrete driveway - use one pound of oxalic acid crystals in one gallon of water. Wear eye protection and read warning on label. Allow solution to stand on stain for tow to three hours then scrub. Use stiff fibre brush (not wire) while hosing down with water. Repeat if necessary.
Cooking oil - soak soiled area through with glycerine, leave for 1 to 1 ½ hours then wash normally.
Copper & Brass - a segment of lemon dipped into salt
Counter tops - wipe with club soda
Counters - wipe with cloth dampened with vinegar.
Crayon marks on walls - use a damp rag, dipped in baking soda.
Cream - soak in lukewarm solution of Amaze. Wash in hot water.
Cultured marble - remove stains with 1 part chlorine laundry bleach with 2 parts water.
Cutting boards - (wood type) use table salt and a slice of lemon squeezed together. Rub vigorously over board. Wash and rinse thoroughly. Repeat of board is heavily stained of darkened.
Dishwasher - use baking soda sprinkled on to clean out side and inside.
Drain. to unclog - clear the sink drain by dropping three Alka Seltzer tablets down the drain followed by a cup of Heinz White Vinegar. Wait a few minutes, then run the hot water.
Drawers - insert whole cloves over the surface of an orange. Let dry and hang in closet or drawers.
Driveway/Asphalt - wet the oil stain with fine hose spray. Sprinkle generously with trisodium phosphate (TSP) crystals. Brush in to make a strong cleaning solution, let stand for 15 minutes or so, brush again, hose off and repeat as necessary.
Dye - treat with commercial colour remover (Rit or Tintex) according to directions.
Egg - soak in lukewarm water in solution of Amaze using quarter cup of Amaze per gallon. For old stains, soak over night. Launder in hot water. OR remove as much as possible with dull side of a knife. Then sponge with a dilute solution of ammonia and cold water provided you pre-test for colour fastness shows dye will withstand it. Never use warm or hot water
Electric Iron - run the warm iron over salt sprinkled on paper. To remove grease, run iron over cornmeal.
Emeralds - use 1 tablespoon of ammonia in ½ cup of water and soak stones, scrub with soft toothbrush and rinse in warm water and dry
Fish bowls - remove stains and hard water deposits by rubbing with vinegar-saturated cloth. Wash with soapy water and rinse thoroughly before filling with fresh water.
Fruit stain - must be removed prior to washing. Stretch material over a bowl and pour boiling water thru stain from a height of 2 or 3 feet. If stain not completely removed use diluted liquid chlorine bleach and launder in hot water. Rinse well. OR first scrape off fruit pulp - if any - with a dull knife; then blot stain with cool water on a clean cloth. If not removed sponge and blot with cool detergent solution to which has been added a little clear vinegar. Then lightly sponge with clear cool water to remove traces of vinegar.
Fruit juices - stain must be removed prior to washing. Stretch material over a bowl and pour boiling water thru stain from a height of 2 or 3 feet. If stain not completely removed use diluted liquid chlorine bleach and launder in hot water. Rinse well.
Furniture - sprinkle ring marks with salt and rub with a cloth dipped in vegetable oil. After stain has gone, wash and rewax.
Garnet - use 1 tablespoon of ammonia in ½ cup of water and soak stones, scrub with soft toothbrush and rinse in warm water and dry
Glass vase - use a capful of ammonia and hot water - rinse thoroughly
Gold - mix ½ cup of ammonia in 1 cup of warm water and soak bracelets etc. for about 15 minutes
Grass - soak overnight in lukewarm Amaze. Launder in hot water.
Grease - remove with solvent. to remove yellow stain remaining on some garments use strong sodium perborate treatment. On a non washable articles, sponge with solvent and repeat as necessary. Remove any yellow stain with chlorine or peroxygen bleach.
Grease - scrape off excess. Sponge over several layers of cloth with dry-cleaning solvent. Launder in hot decrement.
Grease - on wall paper try hand cleaner such as Goop.
Grease (newly spilt) - On carpets or rugs quickly pour lots of salt over the grease spill. Work into soiled areas with a brush and allow to stand for half hour before vacuuming.
Grease & oil - remove as much as possible by scraping with a dull knife, then sponge lightly, repeatedly with dry-cleaning fluid. Always use a clean portion of cloth so grease will not be returned to fabric. If discolouration from dust in the grease and oil remains, sponge with lukewarm solution of detergent and water. Sponge with clean cloth dampened with clear cold water.
Tile grout - use tooth brush or nail brush with bleach
Ice Cream - sponge and blot with dry-cleaning fluid, avoiding contact with unstained area. If any of the spot remains, treat with cool detergent solution. Blot dry with absorbent cloth. Lightly clear cool water, repeatedly and blot dry. OR soak in lukewarm solution of Amaze. Wash in hot water.
Ink - on shirt pockets use toothpaste.
Ink generally ink is difficult to removed however, try:
1. Apply dry-cleaning fluid and blot off all ink possibly with a dry cloth. Use enough to cover stain and repeat process until ink is removed
OR
2. Dampen cake of soap and pat lightly into stain with fingers. Allow to stand about 1 minute, then wipe off with day cloth. Repeat until cloth no longer shows stain then dab with clean cloth wet with cold water.
OR
3. Apply ink eradicator solution No. 1 to the spot with eyedropper and blot with clean blotter. Repeat until blotter shows no stain. Pat repeatedly with clean cloth well wrung out in clear cold water. Pre test before using ink eradicator.
OR
4. Use hair spray on stain and rub with a bar of white bath soap.
Ink from fingers - Remove with vinegar and salt.
Ink - no method with definite assurance. Test first in lukewarm water for soluble ink. Rinse at once, repeating as long as stain continues to come out. If stain persists, bleach with diluted household bleach. If yellow stain remains, add a few drops of commercial preparation for iron rust.
Ink Stains - remove ink stains with a paste of milk and cornmeal. Apply and allow to stand for a few hours. Brush or vacuum. For stubborn stains repeat several times.
Ink stains on carpet - remove with a paste of milk and cornmeal. Apply and allow to stand for a few hours. Brush or vacuum. For stubborn stains repeat several times.
Iodine - wet sponge and rub in paste of water and starch. Let stand 15 minutes. Wash in hot detergent solution. If stain persist, sprinkle crystals of sodium thiosulphate (photographers "hypo") on dampened stain. Rinse well as soon as stain removed.
Iron - run the warm iron over salt sprinkled on paper. To remove grease, run iron over cornmeal.
Jade - use 1 tablespoon of ammonia in ½ cup of water and soak stones, scrub with soft toothbrush and rinse in warm water and dry
Jewelry - Drop two Alka Seltzer tablets into a glass of water and immerse the jewelry for two minutes.
Krazy Glue - (or Elmer's Wonder Bond, Super Glue) use acetone or nail polish remover. Allow time to activate/penetrate. Or use heat to soften. ie. glue on counter top: lay washcloth on glue and pour boiling water on it. Leave 5 seconds and scrape off soft glue with a putty knife.
Lime deposits on dishwashers - use ½ to 1 cup of bleach into empty dishwasher letting it go through the first wash cycle. When it drains, add two cups of vinegar for the rinse cycle. Do not run the dry cycle. Instead run the dishwasher though a full cycle using regular dishwasher detergent.
Lint - to remove lint from wool dampen sponge (well squeezed) and lightly apply to wool.
Lipstick - scrape off excess. Sponge and blot with dry-cleaning fluid (always use clean portion of cloth so colour will not be transferred back to fabric). Continue applying dry-cleaning fluid as long as lipstick appears on cloth; sponge with cool neutral detergent and blot dry. If stain still appears consult expert drycleaner. OR remove with lemon scented household cream cleanser, (Noname Loblaws) Add 1 cup to washer, add water and clothes, soak 20 minutes, wash. Repeat for stubborn stains. ALSO: use Amaze laundry stain remover, soak and wash. Or Luster Sheen. Or apply shampoo to lipstick, Rub for a couple of minutes and rinse under hot water, repeat as necessary. OR spray with air spray and rub off with clean cloth. OR sponge with dry-cleaning solvent. Rub undiluted liquid detergent to spot and launder in hot water. (Soften old stain first with glycerine. Then proceed with solvent).
Make-up - sponge with dry-cleaning solvent. Rub undiluted liquid detergent to spot and launder in hot water. (Soften old stain first with glycerine. Then proceed with solvent).
Microwave - add a slice of lemon to bowl of water, set on high and boil the water. Wipe the interior with damp cloth after the water generates steam.
Mildew - brush with soft brush while dry; sponge with solution of detergent and warm water. If pre-testing proves fabric to be colour-fast, use a dilute solution of water and household bleach (one teaspoon to a quart of water), apply with swab directly to mildew stain. Dab repeatedly with clear cool water and blot dry.
Mildew - wash in hot detergent solution. If stain is old, bleach with liquid chlorine bleach. RINSE WELL.
Milk - soak in lukewarm solution of Amaze. Wash in hot water.
Milk and nausea - first apply dry-cleaning fluid then blot stain with clean, dry cloth. After drying use mild detergent solution with small amount of ammonia. Apply clear cool water sparingly
Mirrors -
Use air-freshener to clean. It does a good job and better
still, leaves a lovely smell to the shine.
Mud - stains try one half of a potato and rub on stains, soak cool water then launder as usual.
Musky - odours insert whole cloves over the surface of an orange. Let dry and hang in closet or drawers.
Mustard - apply glycerine, rubbing it into the stain. Wash in hot suds. If yellow stain remains, sponge with liquid chlorine bleach or soak in solution 1 tablespoon commercial colour remover to 1 pint water. Rewash.
Nail polish - sponge with acetone, nail polish remover or amyl acetate (banana oil). Wash in hot suds. Remove any remaining colour with diluted liquid chlorine bleach. RINSE WELL.
Oil stain on asphalt - wet the oil stain with fine hose spray. Sprinkle generously with trisodium phosphate (TSP) crystals. Brush in to make a strong cleaning solution, let stand for 15 minutes or so, brush again, hose off and repeat as necessary.
Oil - scrape off excess. Sponge over several layers of cloth with dry-cleaning solvent. Launder in hot detergent.
Old paint - brush soften by soaking in hot vinegar and follow with a wash in warm soapy water. Add fabric softener to rinse to keep brushes soft.
Opals - use mild detergent and warm water. Do not scrub. Opals are fragile. Pat dry
Paint - on clothes use Luster Sheen.
Paint - (Oilbase) scrape up excess. Fresh paint can be removed with turpentine. Sponge area with solution of cold water. If paint is dry, moisten with semi-solid paint stripper and agitate with dull side of knife, then scrape off softened layers. Repeat treatment several times then sponge and blot dry with concentrated solution of detergent and cold water. Finally apply clean cloth well wrung-out in clear cold water.
Paint - scrape off excess and treat quickly. If dried, soften with cooking oil or Vaseline. Sponge with turpentine, paint remover, of amul acetate (banana oil). Launder in warm water.
Paint - (latex or acrylic) - if stain is fresh, scrape off excess. Work a concentrated dishwashing detergent solution into stain with fingers; then scrape off. If paint is dried on fabric, use same instructions as for oil paint (above) beginning "if paint is dry."
Paint brush - soften by soaking in 1 cup of fabric softener to half pint of water. OR soften by soaking in hot vinegar and follow with a wash in warm soapy water. Add fabric softener to rinse to keep brushes soft.
Pans - clean greasy pans with salt and a dry cloth before washing.
Pearls - clean each pearl individually with warm soapy water and pat dry with soft absorbent cloth. Never soak a pearl necklace since this may cause the string to stretch and use no chemicals such as alcohol or ammonia that may destroy the finish.
Permanent marker
on appliances/counter tops (like store receipt BLUE!)
Use rubbing alcohol on a paper towel.
Perspiration - soak in lukewarm water in solution of Amaze using quarter cup of Amaze per gallon. For old stains, soak over night. Launder in hot water.
Photocopy on nahagahyde - first try solutions for ink stains. If that does not work apply a clean white cloth dampened in ammonia, rinse and wash with warm sudsy water. Or wipe with a clean cloth dampened with washing soda. Or wet a cotton ball with hair spray and rub on the stains. Wipe off with a damp sponge.
Plastic Laminate - wipe with club soda.
Potatoes - to remove black spots soak in cold water for several hours or add spoonful of vinegar to cooking water.
Pots clean burnt milk - Pour in 2" of vinegar and boil for 10 min. While hot carefully scrape with egg lifter to remove black stains
Pots - Clean greasy pots with salt and a dry cloth before washing.
Refrigerator - wipe with club soda. OR soak soft cloth in vinegar and wipe sides and shelves.
Rose Bushes - use a mild solution of soapy water to spray as an insecticide.
Rubies - use 1 tablespoon of ammonia in ½ cup of water and soak stones, scrub with soft toothbrush and rinse in warm water and dry
Rugs - remove ink stains with a paste of milk and cornmeal. Apply and allow to stand for a few hours. Brush or vacuum. For stubborn stains repeat several times.
Running colours - treat with commercial colour remover (Rit or Tintex) according to directions.
Rust on bathtub - insert the drain plug and pour in vinegar to cover stain, add rounded teaspoon of table salt and stir to dissolve, leave until stain is gone. This removes green rust also.
Rust from stainless steel sinks- use rubbing alcohol or white vinegar on damp cloth.
Rust - apply rust remover using manufacturer's directions, or oxalic acid solution. RINSE WELL AND LAUNDER.
Rust on carpet - use paste of lemon juice and table salt. Make paste, rub in and let dry. Vac and repeat if necessary. Shampoo to remove residue, expose to sunlight during cleaning if possible.
Salt stains - from boots - use Windex, wipe with paper towel.
Sapphires - use 1 tablespoon of ammonia in ½ cup of water and soak stones, scrub with soft toothbrush and rinse in warm water and dry
Scorch - treat immediately. Light scorches will generally wash out in hot detergent solution. Bleach any remaining traces with diluted liquid chlorine bleach. Deep scorches cannot be removed.
Shiny pants - mix 1 part vinegar and 4 parts water. Soak a cloth in it, wring it out and place over the shiny parts of the trousers. Press lightly to remove shine.
Shoe Polish - black or tan polish can be removed with dry-cleaning fluid. Cloth must be rotated so that excess polish will not be transferred back on to fabric. Follow with a mild solution of detergent and water. White shoe polish should be allowed to dry, then brush off. Wet with cold water, allow to dry and brush again. Repeat until all traces are removed. OR rub with ice and scrape with dull knife. Place stained portion between two pieces of blotting paper and press with warm iron. If coloured wax stain remains treat as suggested for dye.
Silver silver items - Place a sheet of aluminum foil in the bottom of the sink and run hot water into it, adding a tablespoon of water softener (or powdered lime scale remover) and a tablespoon of salt. Put silver items on top of the foil. Badly tarnished items may need wipe with soft cloth. Rinse and dry. OR clean by lining a large pot with aluminum foil. Fill with water. Add two tablespoons salt and two tablespoons baking soda. Bring to a boil. Turn off element and immerse silver. Leave for a few minutes and then immediately wash with soapy water, rinse and dry thoroughly. OR use soft brush with silver polish. (Also tooth baste or baking soda can be used) After cleaning rinse in warm water to remove any residue and dry thoroughly.
Skillet to remove burnt on food - simply add a drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to a boil on stove top.
Soft drinks - Sponge immediately with cool water. Apply equal parts vinegar and water. Launder in luke warm water. Bleach remaining in diluted liquid chlorine bleach.
Stone fireplace - clean with dishwashing detergent and scrub lightly with scrub brush.
Table tops - wipe with club soda
Tar - moisten tar spot with dry-cleaning fluid and scrape off excess with dull knife. Sponge area lightly with dry-cleaning fluid, rotating cloth to avoid transferring tar back into fabric. Repeat until no tar shows on cleaning cloth.
Tea -soak in cool water, then launder in hot suds. If stain remains, use liquid chlorine bleach. Soak 15 minutes in solution of 1 tablespoon bleach to 1 quart of water. Rewash.
Thermos - bottle fill the bottle with water, drop in four Alka Seltzer tablets, and let soak for an hour (or longer, if necessary).
Toilet bowl - use Coke-Cola and swish to clean. OR use bleach in the "blue" dispenser. OR Drop in two Alka Seltzer tablets, wait twenty minutes, brush and flush. The citric acid and effervescent action clean vitreous China
Tupperware -
spray with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato
based sauces and there won't be any stains.
Upholstery - remove grease stains - try a paste of baking soda and water rubbed liberally on the area. Let dry thoroughly and vacuum. For stubborn stains, repeat several times.
Urine - sponge stain with solution of white vinegar diluted with water. Then sponge with detergent and cool water. Finally, dab with clear, cool water and blot thoroughly. If urine is allowed to dry it may react with fabric dyes and cause permanent colour change.
Vase - to remove a stain from the bottom of a glass vase or cruet, fill with water and drop in two Alka Seltzer tablets.
Varnish surfaces - clean with cold tea.
Varnish - scrape off excess and treat quickly. If dried, soften with cooking oil or vaseline. Sponge with turpentine, paint remover, of amul acetate (banana oil). Launder in warm water.
Venetian blinds - soak in a bathtub with dishwasher powder - makes less suds and easier to rinse
Wall tile - (Plastic type) Clean with mild vinegar and water. Dry and polish with an old bath towel.
Wallpaper - stains use smudges with art-gum eraser. Soil can be rubbed with a piece of rye bread used like an eraser. Remove grease spots by blotting with paper towel and sprinkle on corn starch to absorb the grease, rub gently and vacuum. Remove crayon rub with soap filled fine grade steel wool pad or white paper towel moistened lightly with dry-cleaning solvent.
Walls - (white) use 5 tablespoons (100 ml) of trisodium phosphate in 4 litres of warm water. wash walls from bottom to top. Wipe with sponge and clear water.
Water rings on wooden table - apply tooth paste or mayonnaise on damp cloth, rub into ring and then buff the entire table surface.
Water rings on marble - try paste of baking soda, water and few drops of lemon juice, rinse and dry.
Water Spots - moisten entire stained area with clear white vinegar. Let stand for a few minutes, then moisten with water and blot thoroughly. If pile fabric, brush with pile when damp, brush against pile when dry.
Wax - rub with ice and scrape with dull knife. Place stained portion between two pieces of blotting paper and press with warm iron. If coloured wax stain remains treat as suggested for dye.
White Pine - to produce an antique finish use strongly brewed tea. Apply with a soft cloth and wipe off.
Windows - one teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent, ½ cup pf sudsy ammonia, one pint of rubbing alcohol and enough water to make a quart. OR to clean use mild vinegar/water solution. Spray on and wipe dry with newspaper. OR ½ cup ammonia ½ cup of white vinegar and 2 tablespoons corn starch to bucket of warm water.
Clean windows on a cloudy day - the
sun causes the glass to dry too fast. Use old newspaper
instead of paper towels to cut cost. Use
vertical strokes when washing windows outside and horizontal
for inside windows. This way you can tell which side has
the streaks.
Wine - stain apply salt to stain and blot up remaining using soda water. OR Blot stain with clean absorbent cloth moistened in alcohol. Then apply cloth moistened in cool detergent solution. Apply clear cool water sparingly and blot dry. (Soap and water not recommended lest permanent discolouration result.
